The "Sign Languages as Heritage Languages" symposium will be held at the First International Conference on Heritage/Community Languages on February 19-21, 2010 at the University of California Los Angeles. The main themes for the conference are: research pertaining to demographics, sociology, linguistics, psychology, education policy, aboriginal languages, teacher education, and development of instructional resources and materials, among other topics.
The Sign Languages as Heritage Languages symposium, coordinated by Dr. H. Dirksen Bauman, is intended to open connections between the study of sign languages and heritage languages. We are inviting proposed papers for the symposium which may deal with topics in the following areas: bilingual education, sign language preservation, corpus planning, language planning, linguistic research, language shift, educational policies, history and current campaigns against sign languages, neurolinguistics, multiple sign languages in one country, sign language and writing, media, culture and language, ideology, academic sign language, and linguistic human rights. These are only suggested topics; others are welcome.
Submit the title of the paper, an abstract of 250-300 words, contact information (email, institution) to the Symposium Coordinator, Dr. Dirksen Bauman, Gallaudet University, at h-dirksen.bauman@gallaudet.edu by July 15th, 2009.
