Undergraduate Summer Internships in Biological Science at Gallaudet University

Submitted by Derek Braun on February 23, 2010.

The newly constructed biology research laboratory at Gallaudet University is presently offering four internship positions for deaf or hard-of-hearing undergraduate science majors for summer 2010. The internships will last ten weeks, beginning May 23, 2010 and ending July 30, 2010.

Two positions are in harmful algal bloom dynamics, and this project is a collaboration between Gallaudet University and Horn Point Laboratory at the University of Maryland Center of Environmental Science. These two interns will spend five weeks each at Horn Point Laboratory on Maryland's Eastern Shore, and five weeks at Gallaudet University. The application deadline for this project is March 15, 2010.

The other two positions are in molecular genetics and will study a common deafness gene, GJB2, also called connexin 26. This project combines molecular genetics with physical anthropology and examines the reason for the unusually high number of GJB2 mutations, which altogether are responsible for 30-40% of congenital hearing loss in this country. The application deadline for this project is March 26, 2010.
