About Us

Our Mission

The mission of the Deaf Academics organization is to foster interaction between Deaf and hard-of-hearing people in academic or research careers.

Who are we?

Deaf academics are Deaf/deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals who are scientists, researchers, instructors, professors, or lecturers within an university or laboratory setting. We also welcome graduate students and other individuals in training. We are an international community, and our members represent a diverse range of fields of study.

The idea for our first Deaf in Academia conference in Austin, TX arose from the Amsterdam Manifesto, created by some 35 individuals outside of the TISLR conference on July 26, 2000.

What does the organization do?

We have hosted international conferences.

We maintain this web site and a listserv. These tools help us correspond and forge collaborations.

We have no formal constitution, no operating budget, and operate solely on volunteer time.
